Rolling, Rolling, Rolling… ACTION

After learning about how to use different technological devices to film and record both video and audio in the previous 3 weeks, today was the day where we put it to the test. Our TIME guru and lecturer Dr James Humberstone had written a piece for solo piano and today it would be performed and it was our job as a class to film the performance.

By using different camera angles and recording/microphone techniques we recorded a total of 7 different versions of the performance which will then be combined to form a music video of sorts. Prior to the performance jobs were assigned and each person was given a crucial role towards the completion of the recording project.

This experience whilst being heavily informative and helpful in the development of our technological skills as music educators was also a very enjoyable experience for myself. The feeling of responsibility received when working with others in a group situation/project such as this one is important for a teacher to be familiar with as it is one that makes an individual proud of their own efforts. Furthermore, this experience whilst informing me of how to operate a recording session also further reinforced to me how important the integration of group work in an educational setting is for the students involved. This experience simultaneously teaches individuals how to complete projects whilst also improving their social awareness and group work skills.

After this experience I will certainly be including recording experiences for my students in their own music education.
