Gamification – A music education perspective

Recently, we had a guest lecturer come in to one of our Technology in Music Education (TME) lectures at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and give a presentation on Gamification. For those who don’t know, Gamification is a term used to describe the action of creating games to assist students in their learning. It is similar to project based learning in that it gets students to learn in a self-efficient way through encountering road-blocks and making mistakes which enable them to learn.

Whilst it may be said that gamification is an effective method of educating students, which indeed it is, research shows that whilst it is an effective method of doing so, it is no more effective that educating students in many other ways such as project based learning or similar.

An interesting concept which I may at some point decide to do in my own teaching later down the track however I do not see my self using it at this point in time.
