WEEK 4A: Audio Formats, Editing Software and The Classroom

In Week 4 we, as a class, had an open discussion about different audio formats. We also discussed what specific audio file types mean and how the type of audio file can effect what mastering you can do to the sound. In addition to this we also discussed different software that can be used to both change the file format of a sound source, for example from WAV to MIDI and also what software is good for both recording audio and editing it.

Different forms of software that were mentioned during this class included; Screenflow, Audacity, LogicProX, ProTools as well as many others. In addition to these different forms of software we also discussed which were the most versatile and worked on more platforms. During my Prac placement, the school I was teaching at used a form of software called ClipChamp which was also a good form of editing software. ClipChamp enabled the students to edit both video and audio files at a level that is sufficient for classroom use. The software was also free which is a huge benefit in selecting software which is suitable for the classroom.

Overall a very beneficial lesson which discussed some crucial details surrounding the world of audio file formats and audio and video editing software.
