Composing from Scratch (10): Being picky and forming a complete work

The due date of the composition was fast approaching so I worked a lot on this version of the piece. I deleted any melodic material which I believed wasn’t essential to the composition and wouldn’t make the final draft.

Firstly, I decided to create a small introduction to the first section. I did this by layering the syncopated fragment in the top 3 voices and varying the techniques that I used to create a two-bar idea. I then repeated this and altered the cadential figure to add some variation. I then repeated this idea again and expanded it with an extra pizzicato chord and a caesura to move into the first section.

To create some variation and development in the first section I decided to simplify the semiquaver idea in the Viola and Cello. The first time I introduce the idea, the ascending part has been simplified into quavers. Upon repeating the idea, I extend it, starting with the last beat of the bar adopting the semiquavers from the original idea and developing in a similar fashion until the complete version of the original idea is complete.

Fully Developed Idea

In the below excerpt, I use a variation in texture and instrumental techniques as well as variations in dynamics to extend my ideas. I begin the excerpt with the melody played in the 1st Violin using pizzicato with the Double Bass playing a basic accompaniment. Every two bars, the accompaniment is transferred into another part and the dynamics increase over 8 bars until the entire ensemble is playing.

The piece is almost finished at this point and just a few touch-ups are needed to complete it.
