Composing from Scratch (7): Using different time signatures

This time I had another attempt at the introduction of my piece. I decided to experiment with the new time signature of 5/8 and used fragmentation in splitting up the syncopated ostinato I developed previously. I fragmented to part so that the first and third beats of the original idea were introduced in the 1st Violin and that the second and fourth beats of the idea were introduced in the 2nd Violin. Whilst this didn’t sound any different to introducing them in the same violin part it would give a call and response element to the piece when performed which I thought was very interesting. I also decided to introduce a simple quaver idea in the double bass using pizzicato on the tonic to accentuate the key beats of the bar.

Another use of fragmentation here, and I love it so much. I decided to use diminution in combination with fragmenting the reduction of intervals in the original syncopated motif to make a new semiquaver version. I decided that to add another ensemble aspect to the piece that I would layer this idea in between the Cello and the Viola. I also decided to transfer the idea so that the intervals go smaller in the Cello and then grew again when introduced in the Viola part.
